Books of the Month

So it seems the month of love, my focus was on books on and about relationships.  I swear, this was completely unplanned and kind of embarrassing.  Alas, here are my reviews.

“The Marriage Plot” by Jeffrey Eugenides

With Virgin Suicides and Middlesex under his belt, I was very ready for the next Eugenides novel. It follows a love triangle between three Brown students in the 80s.  It focuses on their love for literature, the difficulty of mental disorders, and the nature of love.  Let’s just say I was left hanging.  It wasn’t that it was bad, but I felt there needed to be more.  It was slow and lacked in character complexities.

“Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns)” by Mindy Kaling

As expected, Mindy Kaling is beyond entertaining.  She opens up, exposes her deepest fears, and becomes more similar than you can even imagine.  She was afraid of riding of bike when she was young.  Later on in life, she swore off one-night stands for her fear that the dude could be a serial killer.  She may be a little different, but one thing she’s not afraid of is showing her true colors (which are probably pink).

“Love in a Nutshell” by Janet Evanovich & Dorien Kelly

This book gave me the best of both worlds: romance and mystery.  The story opens up with a mystery involving a local brewery and the strain of targeted attacks on the owner.  And then he meets a local woman aiming to make something of herself, which coincidentally is set on getting a job to pay off her debt on her family’s house.  And who does she owe the money to? That’s right. The brewer.  In one word, it’s charming. It’s an extremely easy read and quite the page turner.  And you might learn a few things about beer on the way too!

What are you reading this month?

  1. I love a good love story but I haven’t read any lately. So lovely that you got to read so much. Sometimes I miss it.
