How to Wear Obscure Fashions

Ann Demeulemeester FW 2012

We’ve all seen the crazy runway shows with the seemingly unwearable pieces.  Those shows always seem to make it to the mass media where they proceed to make a mockery of the designer and their current collection.  Maybe it’s a face net or giant hair feathers or a completely sheer dress.  Regardless, it can sometimes scare, intimidate, or confuse people into thinking they can’t wear obscure fashion. I’m here to change that.

I already showed you 3 ways to style a fascinator, so today I’ll focus on a different statement accessory: gloves.  Take a look at these amazing Ann Demeulemeester feather gloves. Now, before I scare you off, realize that I am here to teach you!

A skill I learned early on in life is balance. Practice it religiously in all aspects of your life.  Let’s apply it to fashion and particularly, these gloves.  You have to balance their the amount of their obscurity with the simplicity of say, a little black dress.  You wouldn’t want to wear any other loud pieces. I apply the same rule when dressing in terms of sex appeal.  You don’t want to put it all out on the table.  If you’re wearing a short skirt, make sure you are covered on top and vice versa.

Let’s take this Christopher Kane skirt as our next example.  It’s sheer. Need I say more? First, think of balance. You will probably want to choose other pieces that are opaque to contrast the sheer skirt. Also, make sure you are properly covered whenever wearing something sheer. Next, since the printed skirt is the statement piece, use solid basics, such as a white blouse to accent it.

Is it all making sense? I hope this helps because I would love to see a lot more fun fashion out there!

What are your rules for dressing?

  1. Makes sense to me! I always like one statement piece. The rest I keep pretty neutral.

  2. Those feather gloves are amazing! There is a local designer where I live that uses feathers to make all sorts of awesome things. They sell these really rad belts and vests!
