Last week I came upon the beautiful designs of Kathy Wilson. I was stunned by the balance of simplicity and intricacy. She has great investment pieces, ones with supreme detailing and flattering silhouettes. Below you’ll see my favorite dress, the Carrie. It’s a stretch cotton with silk lining and stamped crocodile shoulders.
What did I tell you? She does great work! You may have even seen her on Sundance’s “All on the Line with Joe Zee.” Take a few moments to get to know the designer behind these lovely pieces!
I started designing when I was in the 6th grade. It was for my first semi formal school dance. I was too short for everything that was available in the stores, so I decided to create something just for me.
2. Where do you draw most of your inspiration?
My inspiration comes mostly from traveling, but music, fabrics, art, nature, movies, and history also affect my design direction. I used to design for the woman I wanted to become. During my experience on “All On The Line,” I realized that people want me to design for the woman I am becoming.
3. Who do you see as your customer?
My RTW line is for a woman who is embarking on a journey to find her purpose in life. She may be an ingenue that gets invited to parties…but she’s not a “party girl.” She is gracious and poised. Most importantly, she has integrity and intelligence. That is why we find her beautiful.
4. Where do you see your line going in the next 5 years?
Wow, that is a great dress. I love how simple and beautiful it is. And 6th grade? She makes me feel like a slacker!!
I know! It makes me wonder what I could’ve been doing by now too!
I recall Kathy’s hard work when she studied with Richard Tyler. She is a gem and the detail in her clothing speaks volumes. Don’t miss her soft linings!
I know! Her pieces are just great. They’re such high quality and tailored for the modern woman!
I love her stuff. The white dress has the right amount of edge and perfect amount of class!
That’s the perfect description!
This is sublime design. I’ll definitely be watching her from now on. Great interview as well. I love getting to know a designer’s philosophy behind their line.
Yeah, she is really talented. I love how subtle the detailing is.
